I remember also hearing that in some Native American tribes the cutting of long hair also occurred during periods of great grief -- the death of a spouse, parent, or child, for example.

As far as for myself, I can't say for sure that I have any particular "religious/cultural' reasons for having my own hair long; but I can say that I feel very strongly about keeping it that way -- so it is a religious/cultural FEELING to me, even if I have little or no knowledge about any ancestors that I can trace back in time who might have contributed to my current-day longhaired-ness.
